Apache Resistance At Oak Flat Against Arizona Copper Mine
Stand with us in joining the San Carlos Apache Nation to protect Oak Flat campground, a sacred Apache site in the Tonto National Forest in central Arizona.

International mining giant Rio Tinto's plans to develop a massive copper mine there would leave a depression in the ground the size of the Winslow meteor crater, drain the aquifer and destroy important streams, springs and wildlife habitat.

Oak Flat is also home to numerous species of wildlife, including an ocelot that was killed on a nearby road several years ago. The area was formally withdrawn from mining by presidential order 50 years ago, but Congress recently approved a land swap that allows the company to obtain private control of the land and evade environmental laws in the process.Published on Feb 10, 2015 by Center for Biological Diversity

Social maps of city's intersections/separations by Dave Troy:
Every city has its neighborhoods, cliques and clubs, the hidden lines that join and divide people in the same town. What can we learn about cities by looking at what people share online? Starting with his own home town of Baltimore, Dave Troy has been visualizing what the tweets of city dwellers reveal about who lives there, who they talk to — and who they don’t. Published on Dec 12, 2014

Portland Architecture: How Good is Good Enough?

At no time in Portland's history have so many citizens been affected by new architecture. New buildings --bold, beautiful, middling, or downright ugly-- are rising in every neighborhood of the city. The city has a process --Design Review-- to decide what buildings make the grade. But its most stringent oversight only applies to downtown and few other, innermost districts.

How does design review work? How well is it working? Should it be expanded to other parts of the city? Three prominent design advocates who have overseen the city's review during three distinct eras share their opinions about how to get the best buildings for the city. Panelists: Michael McCullouch, architect, urban designer and developer; Guenevere Millius, President of Parachute Strategies and chair of the Design Commission; John Russell, President of Russell Development Company. Randy Gragg, director of the University of Oregon's John Yeon Center, will moderate the program.Published on May 30, 2014

The Story of Solutions

The Story of Solutions explores how we can move our economy in a more sustainable and just direction, starting with orienting ourselves toward a new goal.

In the current 'Game of More', we're told to cheer a growing economy -- more roads, more malls, more Stuff! -- even though our health indicators are worsening, income inequality is growing and polar icecaps are melting.

But what if we changed the point of the game? What if the goal of our economy wasn't more, but better -- better health, better jobs and a better chance to survive on the planet?

Shouldn't that be what winning means?  Published on Oct 1, 2013
