“It’s as if human beings and nature have been dating for tens of thousands of years, but we’ve always taken her for granted and never respected her.” Reflecting on his relationship with the environment, Hong Kong’s very own Keep Clean Ambassador Ah Tak challenges viewers to rethink their everyday actions and habits, such as staycation, while debuting his latest love song for the environment. In 2016, Ah Tak was appointed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Hong Kong as the official mascot. Since then, he has been dedicating his life to promoting love and respect for the environment. It is reported that he remains single due to his strong devotion to his career. This talk was part of the TEDxTongChongSt COUNTDOWN. ACTION. NOW. virtual event on Oct. 15, 2020. COUNTDOWN is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Reconciling Ways of Knowing Series, Dialogue 3: "Braiding Ways of Knowing" This dialogue originally aired on Thursday, September 24 at 8:30 am Pacific / 10:30 am Central / 12:30 pm Atlantic. Known for her award-winning books Gathering Moss: A Natural & Cultural History of Mosses and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants, amongst many other ways in which she has had an impact as a teacher, researcher, and writer, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer spoke in dialogue with friend, colleague, renowned ethnobotanist and moderator Dr. Nancy Turner on the theme of Braiding Ways of Knowing. Drs. Wall Kimmerer and Turner discussed how Dr. Wall Kimmerer had concluded that Indigenous and scientific ways of knowing could be braided together in her work on the role of traditional ecological knowledge in ecological restoration and the ecology of mosses. Fellow Reconciling Ways of Knowing project founders Miles Richardson, O.C., Dr. David Suzuki, and Elder Dr. Dave Courchene, Jr. joined Dr. Turner in the dialogue with Dr. Wall Kimmerer to connect her findings and reflections from her work to the objective of the Reconciling Ways of Knowing project to facilitate pathways for building better relationships across ways of knowing and for creating better stewardship outcomes together. What are you wearing? Fast fashion and online shopping are major contributors to our landfills. Sustainable fashion expert Kelly Drennan designs a talk about why your own closet hold the answer to helping slow climate change. From buttons to bargains, from rags to returns, those skinny jeans are more than just today's fashion statement. Kelly founded Fashion Takes Action out of her desire to create a better, more sustainable future for her two daughters. Determined to making fashion circular, Kelly convenes the Ontario Textile Diversion Collaborative (OTDC), with more than 30 stakeholders committed to increasing textile diversion, while unlocking local solutions for reuse and recycling. Kelly is also a member of the City of Toronto's Circular Economy Working Group and their Fashion Industry Advisory Panel. Most recently, Kelly has taken on the role of chairing a task force and committee to develop a circular fashion standard for Canada, with the Canadian Standards Association. Kelly also produces the annual WEAR conference, and is a sought after consultant for fashion designers and brands looking to embrace CSR and sustainability. In 2017 Kelly was recognized as a Canadian environmental leader with the esteemed Clean 50 Award for her work in Education & Awareness, and is the first fashion industry recipient. Anna sits at the centre of the story of how Finland is tackling the problem of food waste, and why that story seems to be heading for a happy ending. But how does the story begin? The characteristics of Finnish society play a crucial role here. Finland is cold, vast in size, and has a relatively small population of about 5.5 million. Survival imperatives mean that in general, Finnish society has had to develop a solutions-based, practical attitude to life, with a strong tradition of working together, even when the various actors don’t always agree. Given this understanding, the most important thing that Anna and her team have had to do has been to ensure that the motley crew of actors in the Finnish food system—the food and drink industry; the packaging value chain; retailers; the ministries in charge of environment, agriculture, forestry, economic, and labour affairs—are all at one table, reading from the same script. The model selects for voluntary action aimed at the profitability and sustainability of food chain companies, while spreading knowledge and understanding of food waste. The learnings are clear for all to see: food waste is a multi-faceted problem, and the solutions need to reflect that. Oceans will play a central role in our 21st century economy, with the rapid growth of shipping, offshore energy, deep sea mining, biotech, and aquaculture. At the same time, ocean ecosystems are stressed and in danger of collapsing. This talk will describe exciting new innovations for making the ocean economy more restorative, resilient, renewable, and smart. Dan has spent the last three decades working on some of the world’s “grand challenges” – e.g. poverty, water, climate change, and oceans - through diverse roles in academia and business. Trained as an anthropologist, Dan spent his 20s living in the Himalayas, where his first-hand experience of seeing the impacts of the global economy on communities and ecosystems led him to work with companies to develop more sustainable business practices. Before coming to Duke, Dan led Coca-Cola’s water sustainability initiative, where he created dozens of public-private partnerships on water and sanitation, watershed protection, and sustainable agriculture in over 90 countries. Dan is now Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University, where he directs the Center for Energy, Development, and the Global Environment (EDGE). Through teaching, research, and outreach, Dan seeks creative ways to make business a force for good in the world. Denmark is well known for the pioneering role that it has played in driving the sustainability agenda. And, remarkably, the country is well on the way to becoming a carbon neutral society – one of only a handful of sovereign territories to enjoy this status. But how did Denmark get here? According to journalist and Danish native, Jesper Tornbjerg, transitioning is very simple and requires at least two steps: decarbonise power production, and switch to green electricity. Importantly, he adds, the Danish case is proof that carbon neutrality can be very good business. Jesper Tornbjerg, 57, Senior Communication Manager at The Danish Energy Association, has been engaged in Danish and international energy policy for the last +30 years. As a journalist he has covered energy and climate change from the first energy plan including CO2-targets (Denmark, 1990) over UN COP3 in Kyoto and COP21 in Paris to a recent agreement by the majority in the Danish Parliament setting a 70% GHG reduction target for 2030. Mr. Tornbjerg is the writer of the publication “Green Energy for All – from Oil Price Shock to International Icon: 40 years’ experience from ‘The Danish Energy Model’ with high energy efficiency and constantly increasing sustainable energy” (2015). As a new project he’s writing and publishing 17 books for children regarding the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
