The Tar Sands Resistance March on Saturday, June 6th, 2015 drew more than 5,000 people to St. Paul, MN for the largest anti-tar sands march ever in the region. The march sent a clear message: keep toxic tar sands out of America's Heartland to protect our water, climate and communities.

In 2017, Sy Adler, Associate Dean of the School of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University, and Jim Irvine interviewed a series of key planners and advocates involved with Oregon's Statewide Planning Goal 10, which focuses on planning for and accommodating needed housing in the state. Don Mazziotti was the Community and Economic Development Director for the city of Beaverton from 2009 to 2013. He headed the Portland Development Commission from 2001 to 2005, served as Portland’s chief planner in the 1970s and acted as chief information officer for Oregon in the late 1990s.

He also worked as the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of transportation under former Oregon governor Neil Goldschmidt. This oral history interview is part of "People and the Land," a collaboration between the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development and Portland State University.

Increasing its structural durability, to 200 years or more, has a significant impact on the environment by reducing the 4 billion tons of CO2 produced annually by its manufacture. #MartinHalliwell, our guest today, has over 10 patents designed to lower CO2 emissions in the making of structures, in what he calls Earth honoring systems, including more durable concrete and geothermal installations integrated with windmills. Virtually everything we’ve been taught about solving hunger is wrong--all the food we need to end hunger is already in our communities every day. Vince debunks traditional approaches and their environmental impacts and introduces the concept of effective food rescue programs that will end hunger and help save the planet. Vince Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, the county’s leading hunger relief agency and a member of Feeding America. Hunger is a daily struggle for an eighth of San Diegans, including 127,000 children. Under Vince’s leadership, Feeding San Diego is innovating creative new approaches to rescuing healthy food which would otherwise go to waste, and using it to provide over 25 million meals per year across the county. Vince has extensive nonprofit and public sector management experience, including serving as Staff Director for Governor Gray Davis. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from San Diego State University and a law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
