Taylor McKinnon is an artist by accident and an activist by trade. In this artist talk, McKinnon will discuss nature photography as a practice of natural history— of mutually reinforcing, deeply intertwined endeavors of observation, art, love, and activism. McKinnon will discuss the fight to protect most places he shoots. In this artist talk, learn about McKinnon’s process in the field and lightroom, laziness and the compositional freedom of long lenses, and the hobbled, pure process of finding minimalism and personal style absent art theory. McKinnon will also share some of his more abstract landscape photography not featured in the exhibit. Taylor McKinnon is an artist by accident and an activist by trade. McKinnon is the Southwest Director for the Center for Biological Diversity, overseeing the Center’s work to protect wildlands and endangered species in the Southwest. Mckinnon pursues nature photography as a practice of natural history— of mutually reinforcing, deeply intertwined endeavors of observation, art, love, and activism. There’s a fight to protect most places he shoots. In his advocacy, he works on a variety of fronts and has helped spearhead campaigns to end federal fossil fuel leasing and ban uranium mining around the Grand Canyon.

Jerry Taylor will discuss the state of the Republican party and how the party will move on climate action this Congress, and what the Niskanen Center is doing to advocate for carbon pricing. Jasmine Sanders and Clara Fang will discuss youth involvement in climate advocacy, how Our Climate is educating on carbon pricing, and how you can better engage youth in your community. Finally, Dr. Danny Richter will deliver a legislative update. Ms. Sanders is a climate scientist, strategist, advocate and native of Monroe, Louisiana. She is the Executive Director of Our Climate, a climate change advocacy organization energized by its youth grassroots movement. Striving to raise awareness to the intersecting effects of climate change and the communities of color who are disproportionately affected, she utilizes the positivity that results from uplifting our youth to make a global impact. Clara started volunteering with CCL in 2016 and now serves as the Student Engagement Director in which she engages students in climate advocacy and helps members conduct outreach to higher education. Prior to CCL, Clara had 15 years of experience implementing sustainability in higher education. She holds a Master of Environmental Management from Yale University and a MFA in Creative Writing from University of Utah. She is currently getting her PhD in Environmental Studies at Antioch University.

We need a solid base camp from which to map new routes forward for humanity. One that’s built on a shared understanding of how core human needs and motivations interact with social forces to shape and drive the dynamics of change.  In this new RSA Minimate, RSA chief executive Matthew Taylor introduces ‘co-ordination theory’ – a set of ideas about what motivates us and influences the ways we act together - from authority, values and belonging to individual aspiration and fatalism.
