In this talk Kashamala talks about how Climate Change will pick the winners and losers of tomorrow Kashmala Kakakhel has over 14 years of experience of working with governments and development partners in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malawi, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. Her core competence lies in international policy on climate finance – ensuring it is in line with the needs and requirements of the developing countries, and works with developing countries to design projects for which funding can be secured from international climate funds. Since 2016, Kashmala is the official Advisor to Pakistan’s representative to the Board of the Green Climate Fund. For 2020, she served as the Lead Co-Chair Advisor as Pakistan was elected Co-Chair to the Board to represent over 130 countries of developing countries. She supported the successful conclusion of the term by approving 37 projects in over 40 countries, worth US$ 2.1billion. Kashmala also led the negotiations to update the Fund’s Strategic Plan, approved in November 2020. This plan will aid the Fund in programming US$ 8 billion over the next 3 years. During her role as the Country Programme Manager of Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN), a programme of DFID UK from 2010 - 2015, she led the development of the South Asian component of the £60 million CDKN Strategy and Business Plan 2011-15, focusing on the procurement, policy measures and plans of action required to build local capacity for tackling climate change. Also led the development of the proposal for the successful £40 million extension of the CDKN programme for 2015-17 for Pakistan and Bangladesh. Kashmala directly procured and managed 13 different technical assistance and research projects under CDKN’s Asia strategy worth £10.5 million including 2 in Nepal, 6 in Bangladesh, 4 in Pakistan and 1 in India. These included: supporting the Government of Bangladesh in to access international climate finance; supporting the Governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh to undertake sectoral research to feed into the Nationally Determined Contributions as submissions for the Paris Agreement in 2015; coordinating the development of a Risk Insurance Fund in Pakistan to target more than 20 million individuals at risk from climate change impacts; managing a consortium of four organisations that technically assisted the group of 48 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to successfully articulate a negotiation position on Loss and Damage from climate change which lead to the UN Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage As an independent consultant, Kashmala has developed a disaster risk insurance product for agriculture and livestock for the microfinance industry in Pakistan, prepared a Disaster Risk Financing strategy to support the operations of the USD 300 million ADB funded National Disaster Risk Management Fund in Pakistan. As external Advisor to McKinsey she was responsible for developing a country level approach to disaster resilience in Pakistan. She also undertook the first critical assessment of the procurement policies of the Green Climate Fund, identifying corruption risks at the national level in Kenya and Mexico. Kashmala also designed National Climate Change Adaptation plans in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Malawi, and Nepal Kashmala has authored a comprehensive research paper on how to quantify economic and non-economic loss and damage from climate change and its potential policy implications on climate finance. Findings have been included in a UNEP report ‘Loss and Damage: The Role of Ecosystem Services’ published May 2016. The paper is also included as a key resource by a UN Technology Mechanism, citing it as the first study of its kind on the global debate around the issue, supplemented with field data and analysis from Pakistan. She has served as Board member of the Climate Action Network from 2015 – 2017, the strongest policy advocacy network of over 1300 organisations. Kashmala writes opinion pieces for national and international news agencies, and is also a TEDx speaker. Kashmala supported the development of key policies on green growth and poverty reduction for PTI’s Party Manifesto, in conjunction with senior party leadership. On 8 April 2024, as part of WCEF Side Events 2024, CLG Europe’s Materials and Products Taskforce hosted a webinar titled ‘How the new EU institutions can kickstart the Circular Economy’. A recent report from the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) highlights that the EU has made very little progress in increasing the circular use of materials. ESABCC points out that the circular material use rate has been increasing very slowly in recent years; it went from 10.8% in 2010 to 11.7% in 2021. As mentioned in the report, the European Commission has announced its ambition to double the circular material use rate by 2030, but this would require a more than a tenfold increase in the recently observed average annual rate of change: from on average + 0.1 pp per year in 2017–2021 to on average + 1.3 pp per year in 2021–2030. According to the report, this would probably necessitate a combination of an increase in recycling and a decrease in the overall material demand. Leading up to the European elections, we anticipate a significant focus on circular economy in the coming five years. As a side event of the World Circular Economy Forum 2024 (WCEF 2024), this event delved into what role the circular economy should play in European politics and how the new institutions can promote greater circularity. The event convened a diverse array of speakers, encompassing scientific expertise, as well as perspectives from businesses and NGOs. This debate is ahead of the Taskforce for climate-neutral and circular materials and products (Materials and Products Taskforce) launching a report later in the year. This report will set the policy agenda for the EU's transition to circular economy, taking stock of the previous 5 years' progress and offering policy recommendations for the next 5 years. She highlighted ways of using the old stories to reflect on today's challenges.

During this interactive session, we discussed how time spent in solitude and in nature helps us to listen, participate in a reciprocal relationship with the animate world we belong to, and to deepen our sense of kinship. The session concluded with the challenge to attendees: what are the foundational shifts we need to make to participate in the larger possibility of metamorphosis?

Decoding hidden worlds: Unprecedented sensing and connectivity for climate, robotics and smart environments.​​ This talk will cover a new generation of technologies that can sense, connect, and perceive the physical world in unprecedented ways. These technologies can uncover hidden worlds around us, promising transformative impact on areas spanning climate change monitoring, ocean mapping, healthcare, food security, supply chain, and even extraterrestrial exploration. The talk will cover four core technologies invented by Prof. Adib and his team. The first is an ocean internet-of-things (IoT) that uses battery-free sensors for climate change monitoring, marine life discovery, and seafood production (aquaculture). The second is a new perception technology that enables robots to sense and manipulate hidden objects. The third is a new augmented reality headset with "X-ray vision”, which extends human perception beyond line-of-sight. The fourth is a wireless sensing technology that can “see through walls” and monitor people’s vital signs (including​​ their breathing, heart rate, and emotions), enabling smart environments that sense humans requiring any contact with the human body. The talk will touch on the journey of these technologies from their inception at MIT to international collaborations and startups that are translating them to real-world impact in areas spanning healthcare, climate change, and supply chain. Une des premières en France. En suivant les codes habituels de confection, elle brise ceux trop souvent associés à l'univers de la mode, où l'esthétique prime toujours sur l’éthique. Depuis son atelier bordelais, Mylène L’orguilloux nous prouve qu’il est toujours possible de faire autrement. Mylène has golden hands and good head on her shoulders : at 27 years old only, she sets up a clothing line designed without any fabric offcut : 100% zero waste. One of the first designer in France involved in this way. According to usual dressmaking codes, she breaks with fashions conventions, especially when aesthetics takes priority over ethical. From her workshop in Bordeaux, Mylène L’orgilloux demonstrates it’s always possible to do fashion differently. As a pattern maker specialized in CAD systems (Computer Aided Design) Mylène L'Orguilloux initiated the R&D project MILAN AV-JC, to explore Zero Waste Design philosophy. Tired of being asked to follow environmentally absurd industrial design rules, she now explores new design techniques to create zero waste clothing patterns. Being able to see the "zero waste" constraint as a source of creativity is, according to her, a sustainable and innovative answer to the environmental disaster caused by the "world's second most polluting industry"...the fashion industry. Garment creation, is not only about fashion designers' skills, it's also about pattern makers', pattern graders', pattern cutters'.. even though we often forget them. This R&D project brings them all together at the same level, in order to recreate a multidisciplinary discussion and make conscious design decisions. After a 10 year long journey in textile, this project has a unique objective: Initiating a meaningful change in conventional fashion design & static pattern making practices.
