Elise Dudley, a Senior Sustainability Major from Furman University, focuses on food justice. Her extensive experience includes farm work, addressing food insecurity, and studying sustainable food systems in Denmark. As a Rachel Carson Council fellow, she researches how backyard gardening can create resilient foodscapes.

Driven by curiosity, Elise aspires to contribute to a circular, equitable, and regenerative food future. Her TEDx talk will explore crisis gardening and a vision where local food production and home gardening reconnect people with food and benefit the planet.

Stephen Grotz, a Charlotte-based architect and UNC Charlotte graduate, champions urban living, believing suburbia is unsustainable for future urban planning. Despite a decade designing suburban homes, his academic research and pandemic experiences revealed its limitations for social exchange and financial investment.

Inspired by SimCity, Stephen advocates for urban settings as the only sustainable, resilient, and humane way to live. His Master of Architecture research, to be published this fall, delves into social and financial obstacles to upward mobility through real estate. He asserts, "fences do not make good neighbors, they make good strangers."

Sonja Michaluk, 18, has secured significant environmental victories, including modifying a national pipeline project to protect wetlands and conserving over 50 acres in Central New Jersey. Her dedication to aquatic environments began at age six, fostering a passion for rigorous citizen science.

These achievements are driven by her 2017 Conservation Communities Initiative. This project encourages people to monitor and protect local aquatic habitats, advocating for data-driven environmental decisions. The initiative operates a microbiology and genetics lab, utilizing Michaluk's genetics-based bioassessment method to identify threatened, endangered, and nonnative species from trace samples.
