Welcome to Hearts and Minds—A QTAPI Community Conversation Series, Session Two: Asians and Pacific Islanders: Our Future Determines Our Past. "Our future determines our past" is a play on words and ideas of how people are taught that the past can determine who we are. Though people can understand the past, will they necessarily learn from it to make decisions that make the future stronger and more just and equitable? When we are ashamed of some aspects of our history, do we not speak of it or acknowledge it? In the present, our relationship to the past—how we appreciate it, amplify it, and even shine light on the darkest aspects, can determine our relationship to that past and what we do with it and how we grow and evolve as a community. How can people, in the diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, honor and embrace all of these histories? This legacy can help people know their histories about resilience and strength as they stand on the shoulders of ancestors. The future may be undetermined, but we hope this conversation inspires folks to envision what sort of future they would like for their communities to be centered in and how they might participate in achieving that vision. Funded by the CA Humanities, whose mission is “to connect Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and diverse cultures, inspire civic participation, and shape our future.” That is the shared vision for Hearts and Minds: A QTAPI Community Conversation Series,” and it is to that end that GAPA Theatre’s “Hearts and Minds” program continues its work in ensuring our QTAPI stories continue to be told. About the Speakers Peter Tuiolosega Silva is the executive director of Kumukahi Health + Wellness, located on the island of Hawai'i. Peter has been an HIV advocate in the Pacific Island community for more than two decades, serving as the HIV trainer for the Pacific Islands, coordinator for the Pacific Island Jurisdictions AIDS Action Group, founder of UTOPIA Hawai'i, and prevention director of Life Foundation. Silva was most recently a public servant in the Hawai'i Department of Health’s Harm Reduction Services Branch. He currently lives in Hilo with his partner of 25 years. Amy Sueyoshi is dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. Sueyoshi holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles and a B.A. from Barnard College and has published two books: Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi and Discriminating Sex: White Leisure and the Making of the American “Oriental.” Sueyoshi also authored “Breathing Fire,” a brief survey of queer APIDA history, for the National Parks Service’s historic LGBT Theme Study, which won the Paul E. Buchanan Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Sueyoshi is also a founding co-curator of the GLBT History Museum, the first queer history museum in the United States, and seeded the intergenerational Dragon Fruit Oral History Project at API Equality Northern California. Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize and referred to by President Bill Clinton in two separate speeches in the Rose Garden. She coauthored, with Wen Ho Lee, My Country Versus Me, which reveals what happened to the Los Alamos scientist who was falsely accused of being a spy for China in the “worst case since the Rosenbergs.” She was executive editor of Ms. Magazine and is a founding board co-chair of the Women's Media Center. The daughter of immigrants from China, Helen has been outspoken on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women's rights and countering hate violence and homophobia. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Princeton University’s first coeducational class. She attended medical school but quit after completing two years, then went to work as a construction laborer, an autoworker, and a community organizer, after which she discovered her life’s work as a writer. At a press conference following the conviction of wealthy socialite Ed Buck last month, journalist and political strategist Jasmyne Cannick said, "Ed Buck is going to pay for the crimes he committed, not just to their loved ones but to an entire community of Black men here." Buck was once well regarded in the West Hollywood LGBTQ community and a prominent Democratic Party fundraiser. But his conviction on nine charges, including involvement in the deaths of Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, maintaining a drug den, distributing methamphetamines and solicitation of prostitutes, ended that. It's a sordid story that might never have come to light—or to court—without the persistence of journalists such as Cannick to bring justice to the victims. Join us for an exclusive talk with Cannick. About the Speaker Jasmyne Cannick founded Justice for Gemmel and All of Ed Buck’s Victims to extend her advocacy for the survivors and victims of Ed Buck beyond her journalism, leveraging both her political acumen and her community relationships. She is the co-founder of My Hood Votes along with Compton rapper Eric “Eazy-E” Wright’s son Lil E, a voter registration initiative focused on Los Angeles County’s roughest neighborhoods. Cannick is a proud co-founder of the National Black Justice Coalition, the nation’s largest and oldest Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization. She is a former co-chair of the National Stonewall Democrats Black Caucus. She currently sits on the board of the Los Angeles African American Women’s Political Action Committee and the Black Alliance for Justice Immigration (BAJI) Political Action Committee. In 2020, she won a seat on the Los Angeles County Democratic Party's County Central Committee, representing the 53rd Assembly District. Collaboration between governments, financial institutions and corporates will be key to delivering the transformations required. Sequestering carbon in trees and soil is an effective tool in the global fight against climate change, yet farmers face obstacles to entering the carbon market. Based on nearly a decade of work in Haiti, Deborah McGrath discusses how colleges like Sewanee can participate in a win-win strategy for climate justice by investing in small farmers to reduce our carbon footprints. An ecologist and professor of biology, Deborah McGrath loves trees. Her research focuses on managing biogeochemical cycles in wetland and forested ecosystems to address environmental challenges in human-dominated landscapes. Dr. McGrath is the Carl Biehl Professor of International Studies and serves as Assistant Dean for the Environment at the University of the South. Since her days as a Peace Corps volunteer, McGrath has worked with farmers in the global South to integrate trees into farming strategies that maximize the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. She is grateful for longtime Sewanee Haiti Institute collaborators Pradip Malde, Photographer and Professor of Art, and Dixon Myers, Director of Outreach in the Office of Civic Engagement. Dr. McGrath considers working with farmers and students to be among the biggest privileges of her career because of their enormous potential to protect and restore our environment. Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang. In 2017, Sy Adler, Associate Dean of the School of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University, and Jim Irvine interviewed a series of key planners and advocates involved with Oregon's Statewide Planning Goal 10, which focuses on planning for and accommodating needed housing in the state. Don Mazziotti was the Community and Economic Development Director for the city of Beaverton from 2009 to 2013. He headed the Portland Development Commission from 2001 to 2005, served as Portland’s chief planner in the 1970s and acted as chief information officer for Oregon in the late 1990s.

He also worked as the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of transportation under former Oregon governor Neil Goldschmidt. This oral history interview is part of "People and the Land," a collaboration between the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development and Portland State University.

His research interests include brownfield redevelopment; urban agriculture in developed and developing nations; sustainable food resource management strategies; and community economic empowerment initiatives. Dr. Dorsey has held faculty positions at Michigan State University, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the University of South Florida – St. Petersburg. Prior to his doctoral career, Joseph was a Peace Corps Volunteer (maternity and child nutritionist) in Africa, a public health nutritionist in the Caribbean, and a clinical nutritionist in the United States. In his talk "Urban Agriculture and Food Security in the Age of Climate Change," he outlines ways we can live more sustainably in our urban communities. Dr. Joseph W. Sustainability: Toronto. July 2, 2010. Yes it's possible says Dr. Peter  Victor, Professor and past-Dean of Environmental Studies at York University. Economic growth is the over-arching policy objective of governments worldwide. Yet its long-term viability is increasingly questioned because of environmental impacts and impending and actual shortages of energy and material resources. Furthermore, rising incomes in rich countries bear little relation to gains in happiness and well-being . Growth has not eliminated poverty, brought full employment or protected the environment. Results from a simulation model of the Canadian economy suggest that it is possible to have full employment, eradicate poverty, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain fiscal balance without economic growth. It's time to turn our attention away from pursuing growth and towards specific objectives more directly relating to our well-being and that of the planet.
