Over the course of multiple decades, BP used the idea of a carbon footprint to push the responsibility and the burden of carbon emissions onto the individual and away from their own practices. Essentially BP created the carbon footprint as an elaborate victim-blaming scheme. Your carbon footprint matters, but the reason why you have a carbon footprint in the first place is that fossil fuel companies like BP have fought tooth and nail against any kind of transition away from oil and gas. North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple has activated the National Guard ahead of today’s ruling on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s lawsuit against the U.S. government over the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg is set to rule today on an injunction in a lawsuit challenging the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to issue permits for the pipeline, arguing it violates the National Historic Preservation Act. This comes as over 1,000 people representing more than 100 Native American tribes are gathered along the Cannonball River by the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to resist the pipeline’s construction. It’s been described as the largest unification of Native American tribes in decades. We go to North Dakota for an update from Tara Houska, national campaigns director for Honor the Earth.

But when industrial development threatens the coastline and its biodiverse ecosystems, he spearheads a movement to save his homeland. Patagonia Films’ documentary short Totoganashi follows Yusei’s evolution from pro surfer and father to the founder of NEDI, a nonprofit named for the space where the ocean intertwines with the land. Lydia Jennings is a member of the Huichol (Wixaritari) and Pascua Yaqui (Yoeme) Nations and holds a doctorate in soil microbiology. Her work is dedicated to environmental science and the essential role of Indigenous communities in these spaces. Her hope is to create more inclusive academic and environmental landscapes. In place of her graduation, which was canceled as a result of the pandemic, Lydia instead celebrated by running 50 miles in honor of the Indigenous scientists and knowledge keepers who came before her. It’s a run to honor the past and present while looking towards the future. In some circles, Southern Nevada is not known predominately for its casinos and resorts, it is famous for its ability to produce solar energy. Now, with the development of high-capacity energy storage, the stakes are even higher. Amy tells the story of solar energy’s rise in importance, but also speaks of the state’s commitment to geothermal and even wind energy. Over the last twenty years Amy Lahav has found her way to contribute towards cleaning up our planet as an environmental and renewable energy jack-of-all-trades, tech interpreter and information seeker. Today, as a senior project manager in the Renewables and Origination Department at NV Energy, Amy has worked to negotiate and procure over 2 gigawatts of some of the world’s most cost-effective solar energy and 690 megawatts of battery energy storage for Nevada’s customers. She has been on the forefront of evaluating new technology establishing the utility’s first non-wires alternative evaluation tool and facilitating partnerships with emerging technology companies to develop collaborative opportunities.
