Clara Rowe | The Power of Ecological Restoration | Talks at Google Clara Rowe discusses Restor, sustainability and the importance of open data platforms to accelerate the global restoration movement. Ecosystem restoration and conservation are essential for protecting Earth?s biodiversity and achieving climate goals with the potential to reduce 30% of accumulated global carbon emissions.

While growing up in Costa Rica, Clara?s family taught her to make positive changes for the people and environment around her, and she knew that she wanted to make an impact at the intersection of sustainable development and conservation. Clara has more than a decade of experience in natural resource management, international development, and sustainable agriculture. This expertise in bridging the gap between global sustainability solutions and on-the-ground challenges has prepared her for the work she?s doing today as the CEO of Restor, a science-based open data platform that supports and connects restoration projects of all sizes around the world.

Supported by a $1.2M grant from Google.org, Restor is accelerating the global restoration movement by connecting people to scientific data, supply chains, and funding to increase the impact, scale, and sustainability of restoration efforts. Founded by ETH Zurich?s Crowther Lab and powered by Google Earth Engine and Google Cloud, the platform allows anyone to analyze the restoration potential of any place on Earth while connecting practitioners, facilitates the exchange of information, and makes projects visible to potential funders and the public. With this information, anyone can better understand their local environment and become a restoration practitioner. Restor is an Earthshot Prize 2021 Finalist and is an official partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Before joining Restor, Clara worked in supply chain sustainability in Latin America, engaging large consumer goods companies, plantation owners, and smallholder farmers in order to design and implement solutions to protect forests and respect human rights. She has also worked in fishery management, youth development, and environmental education. Clara was born in the U.S., grew up in Costa Rica, and after stints in Mexico and Cameroon now lives in Switzerland. She holds a Bachelor?s in Biology and Environmental Studies from Amherst College and a Master?s of Environmental Management from the Yale School of the Environment. Clara was also featured in Google.org?s first-ever Leaders to Watch list, which provides recognition, financial support, and mentorship to remarkable nonprofit leaders who are meeting the needs of their communities.

This is a teaser-video for brand-new 2021 keynote topic: SUSTAINABLE IS THE NEW PROFITABLE. GREEN IS THE NEW DIGITAL.

IMHO, the decarbonisation of our economy is the biggest challenge AND the biggest opportunity in this coming decade. This topic has been on the agenda for decades but had to first be kick-started by the Corona crisis: The radical decarbonisation of our economies and the ‘gradually, then suddenly‘ departure from the fossil-fuel era.

Wide-ranging new carbon taxes are inevitable, and so is the sudden end of the $3.5 Trillion global fossil fuel subsidy madness. During the Covid-19 crisis we have learned that being prepared for emergencies is utterly essential – and that we can compromise and collaborate if we have to. Covid-19 is a test-run for climate change.

The circular economy is the only economy we’ll have in 2030, and ‘sustainable’ is becoming the new ‘profitable’ within the next 5 years. Any company that does not understand how the global move towards decarbonisation will impact every segment of their business – from R&D to supply-chain to production to distribution to marketing to branding – will wither and shrink or fade away completely. Any individual that does not understand what this shift means as far as knowledge, skills and mindset is concerned, will quickly become dispensable.

In this talk, I explain why this tectonic shift is happening now, what it really means, and how to get behind it and prosper in this fork-in-the-road decade that’s coming up.

While Machine Learning (ML) models are becoming an essential component of many mobile applications, they also pose relevant challenges, as they require the execution of an operational pipeline including training and inference. Due to the substantial computational and energy burden imposed by such operations, distributed ML has emerged as a paradigm that can enable ML at the network edge, by indeed distributing the computational load across different network nodes and, also, a better privacy preservation whenever data are processed locally. In spite of such advantages, also distributed ML may face significant hurdles, namely, (i) slower execution of the ML operational pipeline, due to the limited computing and energy capability of the nodes contributing to that, and (ii) the high bandwidth consumption on the links connecting the participating network nodes, whenever the output of intermediate processing has to be transferred from one node to another. A paradox thus arises due to such hurdles and the fact that the distributed ML paradigm has been introduced to support ML-based services and applications at the edge with low latency towards the end devices and reduced bandwidth consumption to the cloud. In this talk, we discuss such a paradox and how it can be solved by leveraging dynamic structures of ML models which already exists as well as techniques for the compression of ML models and input datasets.
