People of many faiths embrace the idea of "creation care" - taking care of God's gift of earth. Join Jose Aguto and Tori Goebel to hear how their faith guides their climate action, and how you can build relationships with faith leaders in your community. Tori serves as the National Organizer and Spokesperson for Young Evangelicals for Climate Action. She holds an undergraduate degree in communications and political science from Gordon College (B.A. '16) and a masters of environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School (M.E.L.P. '19). Tori spent 4 years as Communications Director for YECA and the Evangelical Environmental Network, YECA’s partner ministry. Tori was born and raised in New England and currently lives in the Boston area. Catholic Climate Covenant collaborates with Catholic organizations and across sectors to advance the Church's call to love and care for God's creation, our vulnerable neighbors, and all people, including those we may view as adversaries. Prior to the Covenant, Jose worked for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the National Congress of American Indians, EPA's American Indian Environmental Office and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Andrea Zink has spent her career working in the non-profit sector for mission-driven organizations such as The Salvation Army, Vanderbilt University, and Nashville Opera. Arizona may be landlocked, but our state's geography and history are intimately tied to the oceans. In this talk with Dr. Ed Boyer, we will dive deep into the connections between the high desert city of Prescott and the oceanic world of the Gulf of California and beyond. Dr. Boyer, a seasoned researcher and field course instructor, will share captivating stories from years of field research and teaching experiences, shedding light on the Gulf of California's unique bioregion and oceanographic features. Moreover, we will unravel the remarkable similarities between the Gulf of California and the Red Sea, demonstrating how learning about one ocean can unlock insights into others around the globe. Ed will draw upon his recent experience with Semester at Sea to provide a broader perspective on the world's oceans. He will share his observations of the ever-changing "moods" of the ocean, offering a natural history perspective on sea surface conditions and coastal environments. Join us on a journey that will connect the arid landscapes of Arizona to the depths of the Gulf of California and beyond. Discover how this seemingly distant body of water holds secrets that resonate with our local community in Prescott. Ed Boyer is Chairman and Director of Environmental Studies and Sustainability Programs at Prescott College in Arizona where he has been a member of the faculty for the past 30 years. Dr. Boyer was the founding director of the college’s field station in Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico on the Gulf of California, developing a marine studies curriculum, teaching marine biology, and building programs and infrastructure at the field station. He holds degrees from the University of Arizona (Ph.D., 1987, and Masters, 1980, in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Arizona State University (B.S. in Zoology, 1978), and UCLA (A.S. in Engineering, 1975). His research interests have included the study of the complexity and stability of ecological communities and the factors that impact species diversity; marine mammals, particularly the Gulf of California Vaquita; Intertidal Ecology; and Invertebrate Zoology. Over the past 40 years, he has lead hundreds of field courses and expeditions in the USA and the Gulf of California, Mexico, and Baja California, ranging from weekend field trips to three month long intensive immersive field courses.

Despite the advancements in the food industry and the world, there are still 690 million people across the world who go to bed hungry. Having witnessed the Green Revolution first-hand as a student of Agricultural Sciences in Punjab, Bishow Parajuli sees a sufficient deficiency of a balanced nutritional meal. Parajuli urges people to share a meal and to eat locally sourced and produced foods to reduce carbon footprint. Furthermore, he shares insights as to how one can consciously take small steps to reduce carbon footprint. Bishow Parajuli is the Representative & Country Director for the United Nations World Food Programme. The UN World Food Programme (WFP), which provides lifesaving food assistance to millions across the world – often in extremely dangerous and hard-to-access conditions – has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Bishow Parajuli, Nepali, took office as United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director to India in September 2019. Mr. Parajuli brings 35 years of distinguished experiences in development, humanitarian affairs, diplomacy, fundraising, and management in over 10 countries in Asia, Middle East, and Africa, and WFP headquarters in Rome. Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Parajuli served for the past five years in Zimbabwe as the UN Resident Coordinator and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Prior to joining the UN in Zimbabwe, Mr. Parajuli served as the UN World Food Programme Representative and Country Director in Yemen and in WFP HQ in Rome, as the Chief of Staff and the Director of the Executive Directors Office, as well as the Director of Government Donor Relations. From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Parajuli worked as UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Myanmar. Bishow has also served in various positions in WFP offices in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mozambique, and Botswana. Bishow holds two Masters degrees in Agricultural Development and in Business Administration and an Honors degree in Agricultural Science. He and his wife have three children. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv, leads the Diocese of Lexington and speaks out about the Church’s need to elevate care of creation as one of the core doctrines of the Church and a key pro-life issue. He is the Episcopal Advisor for the Catholic Committee of Appalachia and Bishop President of Pax Christi USA. Bishop Stowe was born in 1966, was ordained a priest in 1995 and appointed the third Bishop of Lexington by Pope Francis in 2015. His studies included the formation program for the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Consolation at St. Bonaventure Friary in St. Louis, MO. He received his BA in both philosophy and history at St. Louis University in 1990. He subsequently earned a Masters in Divinity and a Licentiate in Church History from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. CCL's Vice President of Government Affairs Dr. Danny Richter will spend time talking with Rep. Francis Rooney. Rep. Rooney was our Republican sponsor of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act in the 116th Congress and served as U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See from 2005-2008. This interactive online Forum was hosted by the Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute.

On June 24, Garrison Institute Co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose spoke with Jonathan F.P. Rose, Leonora Grcheva, and Erinch Sahan of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. In this thought-provoking discussion, they explored Doughnut Economics, which asks the question, "What is the goal of economics?" and answered it with a purpose: "Social and ecological wellbeing rather than growth or many other economic indicators that we pay too much attention to." They began with Kate describing the basic idea of Doughnut Economics, and then heard how Leonora, who leads the work with city and municipal governments at Doughnut Economic Action Lab (DEAL), is working with many cities to implement these ideas, and some of the exciting examples. Erinch then described how Doughnut Economics is being applied to businesses. This fascinating discussion was rich with ideas about how to improve the quality of life for all of life, and their application-- a wonderful example of the "Timeless Wisdom, Timely Action" that underlies all of the Garrison Institute’s work.

About Kate Raworth: Kate Raworth (sounds like ‘Ray-worth’) is a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Her internationally best-selling book Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist has been translated into over 20 languages and has been widely influential with diverse audiences, from the UN General Assembly to Pope Francis to Extinction Rebellion.
Kate is a Senior Associate at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

About Leonora Grcheva: Leonora Grcheva has joined Doughnut Economics Action Lab to lead their engagement with cities, municipalities and other place-based administrations that are interested in putting Doughnut Economics into practice in their own context. Leonora is an urban planner, researcher and participation practitioner. She has over a decade of experience facilitating engagement with communities, cities and regions globally through her work as an urban planning consultant for UN-Habitat, a city leadership associate for University College London, and a community engagement consultant for built environment projects in the UK. She studied architecture in her home-country Macedonia, holds a Masters in Human Settlement from KU Leuven (Belgium), and a PhD in Urbanism from the IUAV University of Venice (Italy).

About Erinch Sahan: Erinch Sahan is the business and enterprise lead at the Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Recently, he was the chief executive of the World Fair Trade Organization and previously spent 7 years at Oxfam leading campaign initiatives and founded Oxfam’s Future of Business Initiative. Erinch has also worked at Procter & Gamble as a market strategy manager, established a furniture business and worked for Australia's aid programme. Erinch is a board member of the Social Enterprise World Forum and teaches sustainable value chains at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. He holds degrees in finance and law, and an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.

Youth are taking climate action into their own hands, and their voices are being heard! Alexandria Villasenor and Alexander Posner will talk about their climate advocacy, how other young people can get involved, and how adults can be allies. Alexander Posner, President for Students for Carbon Dividends Alexander Posner is the Founding President of Students for Carbon Dividends (S4CD), a youth-led movement that aims to catapult a consensus climate solution—specifically the carbon dividends framework—into the national spotlight and open the door to a bipartisan climate breakthrough. Alex is a 2019 graduate of Yale University. Alexandria Villaseñor is an American climate activist living in New York. A follower of the Fridays for Future movement and of fellow climate activist Greta Thunberg, Villaseñor is a co-founder of US Youth Climate Strike and founder of Earth Uprising. Sara Saucedo, Regional Fellow for CCL Tornadoes Region Sara served as the first Tornadoes Regional Fellow and a member of CCL for 4 years. She recently completed her Masters degree at AR State Univ. in Environmental Science with a Public Policy and Economics emphasis. She started the first Environmental Club at A-State reaching nearly 500 members in the past three years. She was accepted as an Environmental Fellow for the Yale School of the Environment and University of Michigan for the summer.

A self-described waste tragic Candice Myers fell into the waste industry when she opened a small business with her sister in 2015 and the complexities of the issues surrounding waste captured her attention. Passionate about educating and finding solutions to the overconsumption leading to excess waste... she wants to change the narrative on waste being something we dispose of to a resource that needs to be valued. Self-described waste tragic Candice Myers fell into the waste industry when she opened a small business with her sister in 2015. With a hospitality and accounting background, she never dreamed that a career in waste would be her future, however, the complexities of the issues surrounding waste captured her attention and soon became a passion. Realising she needed to know more, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Sustainability degree at 38 as a single mother to 3 children. That completed she is now enrolled in a Masters of environmental sciences. She can often be found volunteering at litter pickups, building worm farms and debating waste issues. Candice’s passion is focussed on waste but encompasses all the environmental issues facing us in these modern times.
