Ferrets critically depend on prairie dogs, a keystone species decimated by habitat loss and Sylvatic plague, nearly causing their extinction. The species was famously rediscovered by a dog named Shep.

Conservation efforts involve canine teams, like Melissa Steen and Tule, locating ferrets in prairie dog burrows. Spotlight teams, including Chamois Andersen, then find and trap ferrets at night. Biologists like Jessica Alexander collect vital data and administer life-saving vaccines against Sylvatic plague, ensuring this fragile population's survival.

Trefny shared his journey from fearing fire to adapting and coexisting with it as a firefighter. The conversation was facilitated by BYA alum Jess Rimington, founder of One World Youth.

Driven by witnessing the connection between injustice and environmental degradation, Jess Grady-Benson co-founded the Claremont Colleges Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign in 2012. She led the campaign to a victory at Pitzer College in 2014, securing fossil fuel divestment.

Post-graduation, Grady-Benson continues building the youth climate justice movement through the national Fossil Fuel Divestment Student Network. As a coordinating committee member and Director of Training, she plans strategic direction, designs leadership programs, and trains young organizers nationwide to advance divestment and a just transition.
