The Global Village Construction set has one heck of an ambition. They want to provide blueprints for all of the machines and tools you could possibly need to build your own village, at a fraction of the commercial costs. Having started in 2007, nearly one third of the machines and tools are now completed, and the first houses have been built using them. Their ambition, alongside their open-source, social production model, is something to behold. TED Fellow Marcin Jakubowski is open-sourcing blueprints for 50 farm machines, enabling anyone to build their own tractor or harvester. This initiative, launched in April 2011, is the first step in a larger project to create an instruction set for an entire self-sustaining village, with an estimated starting cost of $10,000.
