This richly moving, dynamic, wisdom-packed panel will shift your thinking about the role of business in creating a just, equitable, zero carbon future for humanity and all life on Earth. In commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) principles, the inaugural B Corp Global Climate Summit (June 29-30 & July 1, 2021), seeks to evolve the business sector’s collective understanding and practice of Climate Justice and its commitment to human-centered, justice-driven approaches to climate action. With the aim of centering those on the frontlines of climate justice work and those whose lived experiences are most proximate to the challenges at hand, Summit conveners invited a select group of climate justice leaders from around the world to share their views on several key issues about the role of business in taking concrete climate action centered in justice. Their conversation focused on four key questions: 1) What is the most important thing for the business community to understand about the impacts of climate change on your community? 2) Where should the business community be focusing its energy in working on climate justice? 3) What is the action businesses could take that would have the greatest positive impact for your community? (Around climate justice?) 4) What do you want to say to businesses that are working on climate justice? Glenn Jampol, Presidente, Cámara Nacional de Ecoturismo (CANAECO), talks about his journey from being a student at Berkeley to arriving in Costa Rica and becoming involved in sustainability and environmental stewardship as the founder of the first "Boutique" hotel in Santa Bárbara de Heredia, Costa Rica. Based on the best sustainable standards of the day, Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation and Inn, is now considered "one of the best hotels in the world," according to the New York Times and Conde Naste Traveler. The hotel also has 35 acres of certified shade grown organic coffee, which is grown, picked, and roasted on premises.

Glenn was videotaped by Barry Heidt of sustainabletv with editing support by Tom Hopkins of Sustainable Today at The International Ecotourism Society's (TIES) 2010 ESTC event in Portland, Oregon, September 8-10, 2010.

Gerald Torres, Visiting Professor of Law, Yale Law School Treaties, Resource Use, and Environmental Conservation Treaties between tribes and the federal government have long been a source of contention. Their exact legal status and the rights that are attendant to them have generated a great deal of tension. This last term, the Supreme Court affirmed, by an equally divided court, the obligation of the states to manage resources consistent with treaty rights held by the tribes. The State of Washington has resisted the requirements derived from the set of treaties that make up the so-called Stevens’ treaties. The legal struggle has gone on for more than a hundred years. Those treaties affirm, among other things, the right of tribes to take salmon in common with non-Indians. The question facing the Court was what additional obligations do the states have to ensure the continued sustainability of the resource? This question, especially in times of climate disruption, is critically important to tribes and their members. Moreover, consistent enforcement of the obligations claimed by the tribes would also work to the benefit non-Indians and would cast a light on the structure of trust duties that are at the heart of a state to its people.

As a community organizer in Washington, DC, Anthony Torres brings together thousands of volunteers to put pressure on members of Congress to act in the best interest of people and the environment, with a particular focus on the climate justice movement, fossil fuel dependency resistance, and bucking the environmental trends of the Trump administration. He has organized everything from a dance party protest outside of the home of Presidential Advisor Ivanka Trump, to a vigil for victims of Hurricane Harvey outside of the house of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to a sit-in at the office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. In all his work, Anthony attempts to build an accessible narrative story that speaks to our shared humanity, while acknowledging race, class, and gender disparities. Torres is also the campaign representative for the Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program, which is pushing for an equitable NAFTA agreement that supports the environment, workers, and healthy communities, and is a trustee for the Progressive Workers Union, which represents Sierra Club employees.
