This webinar, hosted by the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership (CISL), explores the themes presented in the recent report "Better business: Re-thinking business models for nature positive outcomes" which forms part of the A-Track project aiming to better integrate natural capital into decision making across business, government and finance (supported by funding from UKRI and EU-Horizon under grant agreement no. 101082268).

Accompanied by a condensed Business Briefing, the work examines how we can transition to a nature positive economy through adopting new business models. This means going beyond operational changes (adopting nature positive practices) and instead pursuing a more systemic, transformational shift. The work aims to identify and scale up business models that are both profitable and aligned with the global nature positive goal.

In this webinar, we hear from Eliot Whittington (Chief Systems Change Officer, CISL) on the importance of this work in the wider context (such as national and international policy frameworks including the Global Biodiversity Framework and the changing regulatory landscape). Anum Sheikh (Policy Analyst, CISL), lead author of the paper, covers the key takeaways and implications for business. Harry Greenfield (Programme Manager, Business and Nature, CISL) then concludes the session by exploring how businesses can participate in this ongoing project over the next three years through a series of planned workshops, hackathons and pilots, benefitting from the expertise of CISL’s innovation, business advisory and policy experts.

Joes Segal s a Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University whose work concentrates on the history of modern art, cultural history, cultural boundaries and identity constructions with reference to the common grounds between art and politics in Europe, the US, the Soviet Union and China since 1945. He is the Author of East German Material Culture and the Power of Memory (2011) and Divided Dreamworlds? The Cultural Cold War in East and West (2012). Joes was the recipient of a Senior Research Grant and was based at the Wende Museum, as a guest curator, and UCLA, as a guest professor.

Josephine Mandamin an Anishabaabewe grandmother with a copper pail of water in one hand and a staff in the other, took on a sacred walk, traversing over 10,900 miles around each of the Great Lakes. She is known as the “Water Walker.”

According to the Michigan Sea Grant, the Great Lakes shoreline is equal to almost 44% of the circumference of the earth.  “When you see someone walking with a pail of water, you wonder, where is she going with that water.”

So the message is, water is very precious, and I will go to any lengths to and direction to carry the water to the people.”

“As women, we are carriers of the water. We carry life for the people. So when we carry that water, we are telling people that we will go any lengths for the water. We’ll probably even give our lives for the water if we have to. We may at some point have to die for the water, and we don’t want that,” said Mandamin.
