He reveals what is often misunderstood about the political diversity of Latinos in America. The most asked question he gets is why any Latino voted for Donald Trump. He talks about this and a lot more, including exploring how Hispanic Republicans relate to climate change. Geraldo Cadava is a professor of History and Latina and Latino Studies at Northwestern University. He received a Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 2008, and he received a B.A., also in History, from Dartmouth College in 2000. His areas of expertise are Latino History, the United States-Mexico Borderlands, Latin American immigration to the United States, and American politics. Listen Now! I remember being in the community pool and when I popped my head out of the water, the water evaporated so quickly I felt downright cold! I also remember walking with coworkers to the cafeteria and thinking, ‘Why in the world are none of these people alarmed about climate change?’” She was really struggling, so she wrote a story for herself. “Tell Me A Story” is a conversation between a parent and a child, a story within a story. Elli, who is now Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s Director of Field Development, has shared the story with friends, fellow climate advocates, and at public gatherings. In this age of global weirding where climate disruption has tumbled the Goldilocks effect into unruly surges of too much and too little water, the restoration of beavers offers ancient nature-based solutions to the tangle of challenges bedeviling human civilization. Droughts, floods, soil erosion, climate change, biodiversity loss – you name it, and beaver is on it. In this episode, Kate Lundquist and Brock Dolman of the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center share their semi-aquatic journey to becoming Beaver Believers. They are part of a passionate global movement to bring back our rodent relatives who show us how to heal nature by working with nature. Featuring Kate Lundquist, co-director of the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center’s WATER Institute and the Bring Back the Beaver Campaign in Sonoma County, is a conservationist, educator and ecological artist who works with landowners, communities and resource agencies to uncover obstacles, identify strategic solutions, and generate restoration recommendations to assure healthy watersheds, water security, listed species recovery and climate change resiliency. The pandemic has hurt many industries throughout the United States. For local news media, the COVID-19 public health emergency was nearly catastrophic. Already threatened with economic demise because of the rise of digital advertising and how consumers use free social media tools to consume news, the pandemic put further financial stresses on local news outlets by impacting advertising from shuttered restaurants, bars and small businesses. All of this came at a time, of course, when local news—with information on the immediate impact of the public health emergency, among other topics—was more important than ever. However, despite the strong challenges for local news outlets, the future may not be so bleak for the industry. Why? A growing number of nonprofit news media ventures are seeking to fill the void for quality local news efforts. Across the country, citizens are increasingly getting local news from new digital ventures focused on a specific region or city. Perhaps most important, philanthropists and major foundations are investing in these new efforts, increasing the chance for sustainability and impact and creating a new future for local news, even at this challenging time. This high-level event will explore how trade and trade-related policies could be used to support decarbonisation, focusing specifically on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM). Alternatives to CBAMs, such as the inclusion of climate and environmental conditions in trade agreements and the formation of ‘Carbon clubs’ are also discussed. The event, organised by the Brussels office of CISL, will centre on the launch of a new report ‘On the Borderline: The EU CBAM and its place in the world of trade’. The report presents an independent analysis that provides a systematic and thorough assessment of the opportunities and barriers for implementing CBAMs, and what factors could improve their feasibility. It contributes to the growing debate on the EU’s recent CBAM proposal, which has attracted much discussion and interest around the role of trade in climate policy and the impact of climate policy on trade relations. The research and event have been supported by Microsoft.
