,000 years ago, humanity began a dramatic transformation of the landscape of Southern China. Forests were cleared for rice cultivation and firewood to power what would become Hong Kong’s first major industrial endeavor. As China and other nations began to explore and trade on the high-seas, a rich bounty of life teemed below the surface of the South China Sea. For the ensuing millennia, that bounty was all but extinguished. Today, we live in a bustling metropolis in a landscape of mega-cities - the Greater Bay Area. With more than 100 million people in our neighborhood the impacts on nature are stronger than ever. Yet, beneath the waves the ocean is eerily quiet - fisheries are gone, mangrove forests, seagrasses, oyster and coral reefs have been destroyed. Climate change, pandemics, and waning resources are a constant threat. Globally, by 2050 we predict these ecosystems may be lost to history. In this talk, I will introduce what we can do to restore the ocean that surrounds us and regain the benefits of proper ecosystem functioning? How can we re-invest in our ecological future? He is particularly interested in coral reef ecosystems, which are currently undergoing a perilous decline. His group’s research scales from the ecosystem to cellular level, and combines tools in geochemistry, stable isotope ecology, ecophysiology, and molecular biology to answer questions pertaining to coral symbiosis and interactions with anthropogenic stressors. By improving our understanding of how corals function and how they have evolved over time, his goal is to foster their conservation for future generations. Although female involvement in politics has exponentially risen in the modern era, there is still a gender gap in political ambition. In order to create safe social and political environments for everyone, women must have an equal voice in state and local government. Muriel Collins, a Union, Mississippi native, is a first year law student at the University of Mississippi School of Law. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Mississippi College. While attending Mississippi College, Muriel was inducted into Alpha Chi National College Honor Society and Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. She was chosen to present to the Mississippi Communications Association as an Undergraduate Panel Speaker in 2017. During her senior year, she received the 2018-2019 Outstanding Student in Pre-Law Award. Muriel interned for Congressman Steven Palazzo and worked on the campaign staff for Mississippi Attorney General candidate Mark Baker. After completing law school, Muriel would like to lobby in Washington, D.C. She hopes to encourage and propel more women to get involved in American politics. Keri Norris, PhD, JM, MPH, MCHES is The Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority's Chief of Health Policy and Administration and leads the Community Health Awareness and Prevention Office and other key programs for the organization. Dr. Norris worked at the CDC as a health scientist, evaluator and epidemiologist. She has extensive experience in the areas of eliminating health disparities for vulnerable populations in the United States. She has served as adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina, Agnes Scott College, Spelman College, Baylor University and Morehouse School of Medicine. After becoming a political refugee in Europe and Africa, she received amnesty to return to Brazil, where she led a spiritual community deep within the Amazon Rainforest. During the Copenhagen Climate Talks, Kenyan tree-planting activist Wangari Maathai was appointed a UN Messenger of Peace. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon bestowed the honor, symbolized by a pinned dove, in a ceremony witnessed by RRI's Elizabeth Baker, a delegate associated with Maathai's Green Belt Movement.

Professor Maathai emphasized activism's crucial role in safeguarding civil society's global interests. She urged for decisive climate action within a Copenhagen agreement.

He keeps hearing about the powerful smell of flood mud. This was the pungent odor throughout the Susquehanna Valley after Hurricane Agnes brought historic rainfalls and a massive flood which upended lives and reshaped towns and waterways. “It reminds me of the connection between smell and memory, and how quickly a memory can come back to you if you smell something in the present day,” Andrew tells podcast host, Peterson Toscano. "I like to think about that as a metaphor for the importance of history and the importance of moments like Hurricane Agnes. They’re always with us, and sometimes they don’t come to our immediate senses, but they can be triggered, and they can be brought up really quickly. I like to believe in the power of memory and history, to mine those experiences, to reflect on them, and recognize and regard them, so we that can walk today in the difficult moments, and get through them.” Andrew talks about his community-based research, the Agnes Flood Project. You will learn why this one storm is still so important, not just for the region, but for the entire country. Lessons drawn from 1972 and the resiliency modeled by local residents during and after the storm will help us in coping and caring for each other during the Coronavirus Pandemic and with the growing risks of climate change.
