The question of how butterflies survive Australia's massive bushfires was answered in part by Julie Favell. Near Long Swamp in Lithgow, while putting out water for fire-affected wildlife, she witnessed common brown butterflies (Heteronympha merope) fluttering inside a moist wombat hole.

This observation suggests that natural underground shelters, offering damp and cooler conditions, provide vital refuge for some species during intense infernos.

Mary Grace Almandrez discusses the significant impact of water privatization on communities, particularly women in rural areas, and the trickle-down effects of water scarcity. She urges us to consider climate change from the perspective of those directly affected in their daily lives.

Dr. Almandrez is the Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island, where she champions diversity, equity, and fosters a vibrant community. Previously at Brown University, she advocated for student success and oversaw key student services, including Residential Life and Student Support. She also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team.
