Biodiversity

About This Collection

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. It is necessary for life to thrive on Earth.

Aldo Leopold, one of the great thinkers of conservation, observed more than half a century ago the importance of protecting species. "To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering," he wrote. Losing species is like throwing away one by one the engine parts of an airplane while flying.

Biodiversity is a major initiative of Conservation International.

Biodiversity conservation provides substantial benefits to meet immediate human needs, such as those for clean, consistent water flows; protection from floods and storms; and a stable climate.

American Burying Beetle Mural
November 07, 2022
Check out the latest from our Endangered Species Mural project, directed by artist Roger Peet! This mural in Tulsa, Oklahoma, features American burying beetles and their fascinating mating and nesting ritual. When these insects are feeling romantic, their first step is to find the corpse of a small animal. The pair of love bugs then bury the carcass, strip it of fur or feathers, roll it into a ball, and cover it in oral and anal fluids that preserve the corpse -- which will serve as shelter and a food source for the pair's larvae. The American burying beetle is one of nature's most efficient recyclers, returning nutrients to the earth to nourish vegetation and keeping ant and fly populations in check. Once common in 35 U.S. states plus parts of Canada, this remarkable animal can no longer be found in most of its historic range. Here at the Center for Biological Diversity, we're particularly fond of these unusual and now-rare animals. We've fought for years to prptect them and we'll will continue to do everuthing we can to prevent their extinction. #EndangeredSpecies #PublicArt Learn more about American burying beetles:https://biodiv.us/3NKpKhe Learn more about the Endangered Species Mural Project: https://biodiv.us/2PVQ25C ******* About the Center: The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501c3 nonprofit headquartered in Tucson, Arizona. At the Center, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
