Teaching Gambian oyster harvesters how to swim
January 12, 2026
Home | FISH4ACP | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (https://www.fao.org/fish4acp/en) FISH4ACP has invested in a swimming programme led by the Gambian Navy to teach women oyster harvesters how to swim in The Gambia. The course has helped the women overcome their fear of drowning, while making oysters a more attractive sector for others. In The Gambia, FISH4ACP is working to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the mangrove oyster value chain to improve food security and incomes for rural communities, ensuring that economic improvements go hand in hand with environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness. FISH4ACP is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) aimed at making fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific more sustainable. FISH4ACP is implemented by FAO and partners with funding from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
