Black Sea sturgeon, ancient species that have existed since the age of dinosaurs, are iconic but severely threatened. Their alarming status and complex life cycles pose significant challenges to their survival.

To address this, the GFCM launched a pilot project under BlackSea4Fish. This initiative gathers data on sturgeon biology, ecology, and fishing interactions. It also evaluates bycatch and illegal fishing through awareness campaigns and fisher participation, aiming to establish science-based management measures for population recovery.
