Sturgeons, ancient and emblematic Black Sea species, face critical endangerment. Their alarming status and complex life cycle led the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) to launch a pilot recovery project, detailed at fao.org/gfcm/en/. Operating under BlackSea4Fish, this initiative collects data on sturgeon biology, ecology, and fishing interactions. It also assesses accidental catches and illegal fishing to inform management measures.
