A successful pilot cleanup in Tajikistan addressed a dangerous Soviet-era pesticide landfill. The FAO, with Global Environment Facility support, excavated 33 tons of toxic pesticides and over 5,000 tons of contaminated soil, making the land safe for greenhouses.

This initiative demonstrates that international cooperation and strict safety standards can restore severely contaminated land for sustainable farming and community well-being. It provides a blueprint for tackling over 200 similar toxic mini-landfills nationwide, protecting public health and the environment.
